The MV Kathrin, a German-flagged vessel, continues to draw global criticism for allegedly transporting military explosives to Israel. According to a report by the Monitoring Unit of the World Lawyers Association (WOLAS), the MV Kathrin, which has been shipping a total of 68 containers of military explosives to Israel since October 18, 2024, docked at Istanbul’s Haydarpaşa Port on November 3.
The cargo on the MV Kathrin directly contradicts the International Court of Justice's findings of genocide against Israel and the United Nations Human Rights Council's calls for a military embargo on Israel. The report highlights concerns that military-grade explosives like RDX/Hexogen and TNT, being transported by the vessel, might be used in attacks against the Palestinian people.
The ship, which departed from Vietnam, passed through various ports before reaching Europe; however, countries like Namibia, Angola, and Malta refused it entry into their waters. On October 17, Portugal revoked the vessel's flag due to its military cargo. On October 30, the ship docked again at Alexandria Port in Egypt, attracting the attention of human rights organizations. In response, the Germany-based European Legal Support Center (ELSC) initiated legal proceedings in Berlin to halt the ship’s transport.
WOLAS's Monitoring Unit has called on Turkey to comply with its international legal obligations by preventing the MV Kathrin from departing Istanbul and seizing its military cargo. The WOLAS report underscores that states should prohibit the transit of such military cargo to avoid indirectly contributing to genocide crimes.
