The Global Sumud Flotilla, which aims to break the blockade on Gaza, has gradually grown throughout April into a remarkable civilian mobilization across the Mediterranean. What began with vessels departing from Marseille has expanded with international participation, reaching a critical stage on its journey toward Gaza.
The first step of the flotilla was taken on April 4, when around 20 boats set sail from Marseille carrying teams of volunteers, activists, and medical personnel. Each vessel, with an average crew of eight, transported medical supplies, food, hygiene products, as well as seeds and irrigation equipment to support agricultural production. The flotilla also included technical materials to help rebuild fishing boats damaged in Gaza.
Following this initial departure, one of the flotilla’s key components, the “Thousand Madleens” convoy, arrived in Naples on April 10. There, coordination with international participants took place, while civil society representatives and supporters welcomed the teams at the port as they prepared for the next phase of the journey to Gaza.

One of the most significant and widely attended stages of the flotilla took place on April 12 in Barcelona. From the early hours of the morning, the port was filled with activity as activists, volunteers, and supporters from different countries gathered around the vessels. This large convoy, consisting of nearly 40 boats, set sail accompanied by banners, flags, and messages of solidarity. Crowds lining the port sent off the flotilla with chants and applause, and the departure from Barcelona drew widespread international attention.
This powerful second convoy is expected to reach Italy and merge with other flotilla vessels. Following this convergence, all ships are planned to sail together toward Gaza in a coordinated effort.
The initiative is being carried out in coordination with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, with active support from civil society networks across multiple countries. What distinguishes this year’s effort from previous flotillas is that it is not limited to maritime action alone; land convoys are also being organized in parallel.
Beyond delivering humanitarian aid, the Global Sumud Flotilla aims to raise strong international awareness about the blockade and restrictions imposed on Gaza. This growing wave of solidarity rising from different Mediterranean ports is now preparing to unite and enter a critical new phase on its journey toward Gaza.
