Mavi Marmara Association in Burundi: Building Bridges of Compassion with the Blessings of Ramadan
In Burundi, one of the lowest-income countries in the world, we were on the ground as the Mavi Marmara Association, striving to uphold the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan despite challenging living conditions. Through this mission, we delivered the entrusted donations of our generous supporters and went beyond immediate humanitarian relief—implementing sustainable development and health-focused projects designed to create lasting impact in the communities we serve.
02.03.2026

As part of our Ramadan 2026 initiatives, the Mavi Marmara teams reached Burundi, often referred to as the “Heart of Africa.” Our mission extended far beyond delivering aid; through lasting community works and healthcare projects, we brought renewed hope for the future of the local people.

In Burundi—one of the lowest-income countries in the world—we were on the ground to preserve and share the spiritual spirit of Ramadan despite the harsh living conditions. Through this operation, we delivered the entrusted donations of our generous supporters and moved beyond emergency relief, implementing sustainable development and health-focused projects designed to create long-term impact.

A Modern Home for Our Orphans: A New 100-Resident Orphanage

At the heart of our work in Burundi were our orphans. We facilitated their transition from an old orphanage—where physical conditions were severely inadequate and serious hygiene and safety concerns persisted—to a newly completed, 100-capacity orphanage built through the dedicated efforts of our association.

  • In their new home, children now benefit from spacious sleeping quarters, study rooms, and safe play areas designed to support their growth and development.

  • This transformation represents far more than a change of buildings; it is a monumental step toward raising a generation that is healthier, safer, and filled with hope.

A New Spiritual Center for the Community: Grand Opening of the Mosque

As the Mavi Marmara Association, we proudly inaugurated a new mosque in Burundi where our Muslim brothers and sisters can perform their prayers in peace and strengthen their sense of unity and solidarity.

  • This mosque is not only a place of worship, but also a center of learning where children in the region can receive their foundational religious education, as well as a hub of brotherhood and community gathering.

  • Opened with heartfelt prayers, our mosque will stand as a vital pillar of spiritual life in Burundi, nurturing faith, knowledge, and togetherness for generations to come.

A Precious Gift as Life Itself: Two New Water Wells

In Burundi, where access to clean water remains one of the greatest daily struggles for survival, we inaugurated two new water wells with the generous support of our donors.

  • These newly constructed wells will ease the burden of women and children who previously had to walk miles to carry water, while significantly reducing the risk of waterborne diseases in the region.

  • Every drop now flowing from these wells has become a source of life—delivered to the people of Burundi through the compassion and solidarity of Mavi Marmara.

Healthcare Outreach Initiative: Circumcision Program for 300 Children

We conducted a comprehensive health screening to address the urgent need for circumcision, which posed significant risks due to limited medical facilities and inadequate hygiene in the region.

  • Under the guidance of our expert medical teams, the circumcision procedures of 300 children were successfully completed with full adherence to sterilization and safety protocols. Post-operative care kits were provided to families, ensuring careful follow-up and support throughout the recovery process.

Sharing at the Table, Blessings in Every Home

To bring the spirit of sharing during Ramadan to every home, our teams reached even the most remote corners of Burundi:

  • Iftar and Food Distribution: Prayers were offered together at a fellowship table prepared for 350 people. In addition, 400 food packages—each covering a family’s essential needs for an entire month—were delivered door-to-door to families in need.

  • Zakat Contributions: We personally and carefully delivered the zakat donations of our supporters to 300 beneficiaries, providing vital financial support ahead of the holiday.

These steps we take in Burundi as the Mavi Marmara Association become permanent with the support of our esteemed donors. However, there is still much work to be done and thousands of sorrowful hearts yet to be reached.
